Can I Really Benefit From Using a Gun Laser Sight?

Accuracy has always been a priority for shooters and hunters everywhere. The addition of a gun laser sight can pout you dead on every time. You have probably seen a laser sight in a movie or a gun/shooting show but thought they were just available to law enforcement or military personnel. This is not true and you can benefit from using a gun laser sight.

A laser sight is a simple addition to your gun that projects a red or green dot on your target. That dot is where you want the shot to hit. Of course, the gun laser sight has to be sighted in to be accurate, but even average shooters can be the Annie Oakley of the neighborhood by using one.

A gun laser sight is simple to attach to the weapon and can be added to just about any firearm including handguns, rifles and shotguns. Just like a scope, you have adjustments for elevation (up & down) and windage (left & right). The laser sight comes with a little tool to make that adjustment easily and quickly. The key is to practice as much as possible to be as accurate as you can be regardless.

For handguns, these helpful little aids can be attached beneath the barrel in most cases. Many handguns now have a mounting rail for the attachment. A simple turn of a couple of screws and it is there, tight and waiting to guide your next shot to the bull's-eye. A gun laser sight runs on a standard watch battery available in any department store and can be changed easily.

Another type of laser sight is one that replaces the rear sight on your weapon. This type can be activated with a small switch on the unit or by a small, nearly invisible pressure pad on the grip. All you need to do is squeeze the grip and the laser activates as long as you keep the pad depressed.

One more type is one that is comprised as part of a new grip for your weapon. For this, you need to simply purchase the grip type for your handgun and the laser is part of the weapon. This type of gun laser sight is very low profile and adds no outward changes to the gun's appearance. These also do not add any size to the gun, so your existing holster still works just fine. These typically have a small button on the inside of the grip that you press with your finger when aiming that activates the laser.

To "sight in" your gun laser sight, follow these steps:
•    1. Attach the laser sight to the gun securely.
•    2. Make sure it works and you can see the laser dot.
•    3. Load your gun and put the dot where you want the bullet to hit.
•    4. Look where the shot hit and keep the dot where you wanted it and adjust until the laser is in the bullet hole.
•    5. Repeat this until you can get every shot in the same area consistently. When you get it done, you will be dead on every time.

This may take several shots or even a box of ammo to get right, but after you get it adjusted, that gun laser sight WILL put you on target.

Green Laser Sights verses Red Laser Sights

In the movies, when a law enforcement or super villain henchmen aims a gun at the hero you immediately know it because of the Bright Red point of the laser sight on the gun.  Of course, this event generally happens at night since red laser sights are difficult to see in the daylight.  Recently though, I was given the opportunity to examine several different types of laser sights and one that I came across intrigued me.  The laser was green.  This made me wonder, what is the difference between green and red laser sights?  Which is better?  Which is easier to see in different situations?

Red lasers are made with a diode, optics, and a minimal amount of electronics.  In fact, they are so simple that Instructables' website has directions to make them in less than ten steps.  The simplicity and commonality of the ingredients make red lasers cheap and easy to manufacture.  According to scientists, "The difference between a red laser and a green laser light is that the red laser light has a longer wavelength (about 650 nanometers) than does the green (about 532 nanometers)."  On the other hand, green lasers are more expensive because they require a special diode that is rarer, a frequency-doubling crystal, and a second infrared laser crystal.  All of these must be perfectly aligned in order for the laser to function correctly.

So green lasers are more complicated and costly than red lasers, but does that mean they perform better?  You might think that the two lasers are basically the same, but this is not the case.  Green light bends more than red light when it enters a glass lens, so a green laser sight will look slightly different than a red laser light.  The strongest argument for using a green laser light is visibility; green light is more visible to the naked eye than red light because green is closer to the center of the visible spectrum.  "As many know, laser sights can be very beneficial; but there is one major flaw... ordinary red lasers can be next to impossible to see in most daylight conditions. The benefit of a green laser is that it is much more visible, allowing for it to be used anytime, day or night, indoors or outdoors, permitting you to track your target quicker and more accurately. Additionally…you can actually see a very intimidating visible beam in low-light conditions."
