Talk Security The Pros And Cons Of Pepper Gel
Which Pepper Spray to Buy
First there are several things to consider before choosing a self-defense spray such as your environment, what are the laws in your area in regards to possession and use of defense sprays; will the defense spray be concealed by you when carried?
Types of Defense Sprays
Defense sprays come in various formulas, sizes, nozzle types, and spray patterns. They usually contain one or more of the following chemicals.
CS (Orthochlorobenzalmalonitrile) also known as CS Tear Gas is a chemical agent used in riot control by the military and police. The compound is dispersed as an aerosol or as a finely divided powder. Exposure to CS causes intense pain in the eyes and upper respiratory tract; the pain spreads to the lungs and gives the sensation of suffocation. In humid weather CS may cause severe blistering of the skin.
CN (alphachloroacetaphenone) also known as CN or CN Tear Gas has been around for a while. It was a popular defense spray in the past until the introduction of pepper spray into the law enforcement community. CN Tear Gas is an irritant to membrane tissues. It causes stinging pain and profuse tearing.
The disadvantages of CS and CN Tear Gases CS and CN Tear Gases irritate the membrane tissues and cause stinging and tearing. They can take from 5 to 30 seconds before they are effective and may not work if someone is drunk, on drugs, psychotic, or tolerant to pain. The affects of CN and CS Gases are not immediate taking up to 30 seconds to affect the assailant. These chemicals aren't effective self-defense weapons unless formulated with the third chemical listed below OC or Oleoresin Capsicum.
OC (Oleoresin Capsicum) also known as OC Pepper Spray, Pepper Spray, OC gas, or capsicum spray is a lachrymatory agent or a (tearing agent) which is used in riot control, crowd control and personal self-defense, including defense against dogs. The active ingredient in pepper spray is capsaicin, which is a chemical derived from the fruit of plants in the Capsicum genus (hot pepper plants) category, including chillis.
Pepper Spray can be purchased with formulas ranging from 1-20% of active OC ingredient. Exposure to OC Pepper Spray causes the person's eyes to slam shut. A person may be able to open their eyes after direct exposure however; OC dilates the capillaries and causes temporary blindness. Additionally, instant inflammation of the breathing tissues restricts all but life support breathing. They double over coughing uncontrollable; this condition is temporary but very debilitating.
The heat generating capacity of OC Pepper Spray is messured in Scoville Heat Units or (SHU's) Peppers have a range of range 0-300,000 Scoville Heat Units. Pure OC can have a rating of 15 million SHUs. The type of pepper used to make the pepper spray determines the heat generating capacity. Basically the higher the SHU the hotter. The formula percentage has no bearing on the heat generating capacity of OC Pepper Spray. The higher the percenatge of OC in the spray the thicker the formula, resulting in a slower penitration rate. Therefore a 1% formula OC Pepper Spray penetrates faster than the higher percentage formulas thus affecting the assailant quicker. The disadvantage of the thinner OC formulas are that the assailant will recover sooner.
Always check with your local law enforcement agency in regards to the possession and use of any self-defense weapon. Defense sprays can be purchased in CS or CN Tear Gas, OC Pepper Spray or CN/OC and CS/OC combinations.
Defense sprays come in several spray patterns: spray, stream, fog, foam and gel.
Spray Pattern disperses in the direction pointed and does not have a wide spray pattern. The disadvantage of using a spray is blowback. Blowback is when you spray your defense spray directly into the wind defending yourself and it blows on you or others contaminating both you and others in the area.
Stream Pattern disperses at a greater range than sprays usually 15 feet. Stream sprays aren't as affected by windy conditions as sprays making it unlikely for blowback. However the OC doesn't disperse as well out of the carrier as sprays with spray patterns.
Fogger Pattern disperses in a wide pattern and is the preferred choice for defense against multiple assailants. The fog pattern stays in the air and they have a range up to 20 feet.
Foam Pattern disperses in a foam pattern and is good for use in crowded areas because secondary exposure is minimal due to the concentration. The pattern isn't very wide and police reports have shown that assailants have wiped the foam off their face and threw the foam back at officers. Foam pattern is good unless you have to subdue an individual for an arrest or detainment.
Gel Pattern disperses in a sticky gel and literally sticks to an assailants face or body. This formula is new to the industry and eliminates the possibility of having it thrown back at you like with foam patterns. Blowback and secondary exposure are minimal with this new formula.
The sizes of pepper sprays range from 2oz. to 1lb. and come in several types of carriers jogging weights, kubatons (striking device), key-chains and even pagers for easy access without notice. Defense sprays are a very good non-lethal way of defending you or loved ones. They don't require contact with an assailant like stun guns and batons making it an excellent choice for defense at a distance.
Pepper Gel Has a great advantages over pepper sray and pepper foam. During an attack after pepper foam is discharged and hits the assailant the pepper foam can be wiped off and smeared onto another person. Pepper spray can blow onto an unintended person.

Things to Consider Before Buying a Self Defense Spray
So, you have decided to take up jogging in order to shed a few pounds. Because the neighborhood is not what it used to be, you opt to purchase a can of self defense spray. Simple enough, huh? Not necessarily.
Consider this :There are three basic compounds
CS - Orthochlorobenzalmalonitrile - Tear Gas - Irritant
CN - Alphachloroacetaphenone - Tear Gas - Irritant
OC - Oleo resin Capsicum - Pepper Spray - Inflammatory Agent
Of the three, OC is the newest and most effective. Some manufactures carry a combination of the three, such as, OC/CS or OC/CN. They claim that there are documented advantages to these mixtures, as well as the OC only formulations. Tear Gas- CN and CS are irritants. They irritate soft membrane tissues and cause coughing, tearing and stinging pain. They take between 5 and 30 seconds before becoming effective. For people who cannot feel pain ( people on drugs, drunk,or having a psychotic attack ) there may be no effect at all. Because of these reasons, I suggest that these two chemicals, used alone, be only used by trained professionals. CN and CS also takes longer to wear off and has been known to cause other complications.
Pepper Spray OC on the other hand is an inflammatory compound, which when sprayed into the face of an assailant, causes their eyes to slam shut IMMEDIATELY. Even if the attacker was able to open his eyes, he still could not see . The OC will dilate the capillaries within the eye and cause temporary blindness. Next, the uncontrollable coughing and accompanying fit will take the person to the ground. The OC also causes inflammation to the respiratory system which causes labored breathing. It is hard, if not impossible, for anyone, after being sprayed, to continue with what they were doing.
OC is manufactured by processing different types of hot peppers. The heat in peppers is measured in SHU's (Scoville Heat Units). A bell pepper has 0 SHU's; a jalapeño about 5,000 and a habanero can have up to 300,000 SHU's ! Pure OC has a heat rating of 15 million. Most pepper sprays are rated in both percentages and SHU's, which only confuse things. My first question would be: A percentage of what? A 20% concentration of jalapeño peppers will not be as hot as a 2% concentration of habanero pepper. Therefore I recommend that you judge the strength of a pepper spray simply by the SHU's. 2,000,000 SHU's is very effective, and will do the trick. A hotter concentration may start to cause tissue damage.
Suspension Medium This is the carrier agent that keeps the OC floating in solution and aids in the dispersal from the can. Most manufactures keep their actual medium formula secret, but there are three basic ones. Liquids; Gels; and Foams.
Delivery Types Foams and Gels These are the new kids on the block and they have been documented to be very effective. They shoot farther (up to 18ft.), so you do not have to be as close to your assailant. They are also more wind resistant. The concept is to get some of this sticky glue like substance on your attackers face. His first reaction is to wipe it off; which will only allow more surface area contact with attackers skin and compounding his problems. Here is a story of a lady who used pepper gel on her attacker.
Liquid OC Sprays Foggers The most effective because the ultra fine mist is easily inhaled and causes inflammation to respiratory tissues as well as the eyes. Foggers have very strong stopping power. They also allow you to put up a barrier between you and your attacker and and allow you to make your escape, as the fog tends to linger in the air. Foggers are usually effective 8-12ft. maximum and can be wind affected.
Stream Sprays Usually has a greater range, typically up to 15-20ft. Stream sprays do not dispense in small droplets, therefore are not as easily inhaled. (They do break-up somewhat on impact and does affect the eyes face and skin.). Streams sprays are not affected by wind as much as foggers or cone sprays. There is less chance of blow back. Stream sprays may require more accurate aim though. You can use a waving action until your target is homed in on.
Cone Mist A wider spray pattern with finer droplets than a stream spray are emitted. Their range is 4-8ft. Cone sprays can also be used as a barrier or against multiple assailants and can be wind affected. Remember when using a fogger or a cone mist to spray and get away to avoid blow-back. Wind can shorten the range of these types of sprays.
Other Considerations Some of these products also include a UV dye that will that will mark the assailant. A black light will enable the police to see the dye. The average number of shots per container and volume are also important. All of these different choices are designed to give you the flexibility to choose the right defensive spray for your individual needs. Which product fits you best? Lastly, check your local laws for any restrictions on defensive sprays.
